Failure - maternity units - variable quality of care

Maternity services website for parents launched

The Healthcare Commission has launched a new website;www.healthcarecommission.org.uk/maternity.cfm enabling pregnant women and their families to see details of the quality of care provided by their maternity services. They can access comprehensive information about their local maternity service enabling them to easily search for and access information on each trust.

The website allows users to see how their maternity service performed in 25 key areas including how well each trust provided recommended antenatal screening, appropriate use of caesarean sections and the quality of postnatal support offered to parents in caring for the baby.

The launch of the website follows the most comprehensive maternity services review ever. This was published in January and found that there were significant variations in the quality of care provided by maternity services across the country.

Adrian Desmond, a leading medical negligence lawyer specialising in cerebral palsy compensation claims at Boyes Turner says: "The Healthcare Commission has focused on maternity services for some time now and this new website is a testament to their work. It will without doubt be of interest to service users but also hopefully will act as a lever to ensure improvement in those maternity units falling behind acceptable standards."
